Different Impressions

Image
All of you probably know The Photodiarist . I visit her blog practically everyday and learn a lot about photography from her through her pictures. She takes most of her pictures in Black and White. Her pictures are stunningly beautiful. Today she posted a series of beach pictures and we got into a discussion over them (read it all at her blogpost ). My first impression was that beach pictures with lots of people should be in color, otherwise there seems to be something missing to me. Biana from A little something something brought up the idea of giving them a vintage color theme, which made me think, that if you turn the "pure" black and white into sepia this impression of something missing would be gone. On third thought, to me it seems that this impression of something missing was brought forth by the "plain" sky, there is no structure or depth to it. Well there was obviously cloudless sky, so what should provide this structure? In any case this inspired me to p...

Pesto and Pasta

Image
At the moment I barely take analogue pictures since I'm in full jobsearch mode and simply don't have the time (I wrote 3 applications today!) and the nerve, so for the time being you get more digital pictures from me. I saturated the colors in the first pic and got a bit of fading in in the second pic. I took those pics at this months beginning while creating new recipes for me. You wouldn't believe how easy a really tasty and healthy pesto is... DIGITAL IXUS 75

'Framed': Advanced Diploma of Fine Arts students exhibit at the Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest

Image
Andy Petith's assemblage portrait of Margo Lewers, installed in the Gallery window. 'Framed' is the name of a exhibition project being undertaken at the Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest by students of the Advanced Diploma of Fine Art. The exhibition is part of the Advanced Diploma professional practice program, and has been a valuable opportunity for our students to interact with a Regional Gallery, and gain exposure for their work. As part of the project, students were given a lengthy briefing by Gallery staff including CEO John Kirkman, Gallery Director Anne Loxley, Manager - Education and Public Programs Naomi McCarthy, and Curator and Collections Manager Shirley Daborn. The students were then invited to make a pitch for a site specific work, relating to the history and context of the Gallery site, including the lives and practices of its former artist occupiers Gerald and Margo Lewers, and/or the work of Sydney abstract artists. As part of their profess...

Night shoot

Image
Untitled image by Katherine Fallah A few weeks ago, students from the second year Diploma of Fine Art photography class went on a night shoot. The normal class time was rescheduled so that instead of morning, the class met in the late afternoon. This allowed us to take advantage of other possibilities of light, as the afternoon changed to dusk and dusk changed to evening. Several types of cameras were in use, including lo-fi plastic film cameras , compact cameras, and digital SLRs. The visual results were varied, and include moody, poetic, melancholic, abstract, playful and gritty images. For more images from the shoot, visit our flickr site : http://www.flickr.com/photos/wsifineart/sets/72157624047065529/

Upon these houses I have slept

Image
Detail from  Upon these houses I have slept , Liquid paper, ink and acrylic on paper. "WHAT the hell is that?" my sister asks. "It looks like a map." Perhaps. She was talking about a painting I just started on a whim today. I was thinking about a conversation I had recently about the nature of art and what makes art 'Art', and decided to just stop thinking, start drinking and then paint something to test the idea that anybody, at any moment, can create something which expresses one of the, arguably, fundamental functions of art: to foster self-expression; reveal, reflect and create emotion. Who knows what this expresses, but I'm pleased to think I did something creative today after a long spell of nothing but work, work, work. As a side note, dear PLEASURE readers, I should announce that I shall be, over the coming weeks, embarking on something of a tour of the US and hope to keep a diary of my time there, here, in this space. Stay tuned. Meanwhile, per...
