Toast is toast

The experimental artwork that has been up in the Trapezium Gallery may now be toast, but the video record lives on....

Leipzig at Night series - The open gate

Image
Way back in last August Chris and I were doing our nightshots in Leipzig, and we had tons of fun during these few hours. This is one of the few pictures taken with the Lomo that worked out. Since I can't screw the Lomo Fisheye 2 on a tripod, I always need to find something to steady it on for long exposures. In this case I took the wall.

Looks hot, but felt cool - End of March on the Darss

Image
I took this picture at the Darsser Ort, which is a biological reserve. There you have a lovely little round tour, where you aren't allowed to leave the way so that you don't disturb the animals or do harm to the plants. I really, really enjoyed the walk and took tons of pictures, which I will publish here eventually.  Again, all photographies you can buy via my DaWanda-Shop . Just tell me in my newest post here, which one you want and I'll put it up on DaWanda .

We are yellow now

Image
And in what colours he had painted it! Blue and green and even black. In 1938, the week the Pope died and the  Sentinel  came out with a black border, he had come across a large tin of yellow paint and painted everything yellow, even the typewriter. That had been acquired when, at the age of thirty-three, he had decided to become rich by writing for American and English magazines; a brief, happy, hopeful period. The typewriter had remained idle and yellow, and its colour had long since ceased to startle. --V.S. Naipaul,  A House for Mr Biswas .

Need a bit of cooling down? There you go...

Image
I took this picture last December. During the winter I mostly used my Digital Ixus, since there wasn't enough light for my Lomo most of the time. On this film I found pictures from last October too.  The house on the left is what is called a "Platte", it's a house build of concrete panels. I live in a "Platte" and I was lucky, because I have a fantastic view over Leipzig and woodland and it is quite quiet, which surprised me.  Have a wonderful new week.

Starting over: New Blogname and new shop

Hello my lovely readers. I know this blog has lacked some inspiration during the last few months and for that I apologize. Lately I was concerned with other more pressing matters (jobsearch and surviving in general). As this posts title states I have renamed this blog and have opened a shop, a shop at www.dawanda.com (which you could call the german version of etsy.com ). In my shop, which is called " San's Visual Art " I'll sell my drawings (so far there are 3 postcards and one drawing on offer) and selected photos (haven't posted any yet). The prices vary, but are moderate. So if you ever wanted a certain picture of mine, just comment under the newest post and tell me which one in what size and I'll be happy to offer it in my shop: http://sans-visual-art.dawanda.com . I'm happy about normal comments too and I read them all. Always have, always will. Alright, enough of the sales talk. I wish you all a wonderful weekend. Enjoy it with somebody you love or...

Since I'm preparing my own company I've started to take a different kind of pictures. It is interesting how my photography changes with my moods and goals. In any case I am currently totally into macro photography. And after those boring pics of yesterday I wanted to give you a glimpse of colour.

Toni Warburton's artist talk

Image
Toni Warburton, 'garland a watercourse', mixed media, dimensions variable, 2010 Advanced Diploma of Fine Art cultural productions teacher Toni Warburton is giving an artist talk this Wednesday, May 25, at 1pm at the National Art School in Sydney. Toni's art practice is centred around ceramics and installation. In her work she engages with a range of media and situations to explore meanings and relationships between place, objects and social transactions and space, processes and systems within natural environments. Toni is interested in the idea of an encounter through the notion of a"returning gaze‟ : “ Occasionally on a familiar walk, a surrealist kind of visual encounter might occur: a perceptual jolt into the tantalising realm of the uncanny. A desire to sustain strangeness as a form of noticing has led me to create these works.”

Something you knead to know: Bad Pun epidemic sweeps Nepean College

A epidemic of bad punning has swept across Nepean College since work began in the Fine Arts section last week on a large mural made of toast. First to show symptoms was Eoin Ocaoimh, Head Teacher of Adult Basic Education, when he 'hoped the students knew which side their bread was buttered on'. This caused Technical Officer Peter Helm to state that the 'whole thing was rather crumby'. Fortunately Nicola Read, photography teacher, did not lower herself to this level as she comes from an Upper Crust family. Fine Arts Technical Officer Ricardo Della-Ricca is demonstrating severe symptoms, and has been heard to comment that the whole thing was a tip-top idea. He did express some concerns as to whether any buns  would be included in the video documentation, and wondered if everything would jam in to the picture. 'Oh crumbs', said photography teacher Darren Edwards. Printmaking teacher Jo Ernsten felt that all  information on the artwork should be on a kneads to know ...

My most anticipated films of 2011!

Image
1. Pedro Almodovar's The Skin I Live In It's a bad title (reads better in Spanish: La Piel que Habito ) but Almodovar has been on a winning streak for the last decade starting with Habla Con Ella . A string of films: Bad Education , Volver and Broken Embraces have cemented his technical proficiency. Of these films, Bad Education remains my personal favorite with its particularly dark humour, kinkiness and treatment of a deeply taboo subject. The film resembles something of a personal fetish and a prayer; the tone is one of a hidden secret which the director is seeking to set free amidst a puzzle of plot devices. Unforgettable. Volver was a perfect film; perhaps a little too perfect. Broken Embraces was a stylistic tour de force that lacked something of the edge of the best Almodovar. The subject matter of The Skin I Live In (a plastic surgeon who keeps his wife prisoner) seems like the perfect antidote. 2. Terrance Malick's The Tree of Life I enjoyed Malick's The N...

BENCHMARKS: Seven Women in Design | New York

Image
The DailyHeller on BENCHMARKS From June 10 through August 15,  Center Gallery at Fordham University Lincoln Center  Campus,  Lindsay Reichart and Abby Goldstein are pleased to present the exhibition  “ Benchmarks: Seven Women in Design | New York. ”  In the past half a century women have gained prominence and recognition in what was  a male dominated profession.
