Tipsy??

Leipzig, Schillerstreet, the cities music school building looking towards the Deutsche Bank building. NO, I didn't put those bottles there, I simply saw the glint . I don't drink this stuff. I prefer Gin Tonic or Cosmopolitans or a good dry white wine.

Crossing boundaries

On Richard Rawlins Gotcha  at Alice Yard, Woodbrook, Port of Spain Once more, art confronts us with the intersection of ideas. Richard Rawlins' recent exhibition, Gotcha , raised questions over the place of modern practices of design within the traditional realm of art and painting, of politics and art and of installation work and non-traditional formats for creating design and for expression (specially designed lapel buttons are part of the work). The work, recently shown at Alice Yard, comprised a series of politically-themed paintings ( are any paintings not concerned with politics? ) displayed in various spaces within the Woodbrook backyard space. The work used simple designs ( are there such things? ) which pushed quite close to iconography (the artist plans a series of limited edition prints to be sold at a later event in a few months time). White elephants, dangling flies that become pianos, non-performing arts academies and lego politicians all suggest what we all know...

Cheers

Okay, so in the last two days I got back two "NO"s for job applications in the photographic sector. I'm surprisingly not mad/sad about it, since they were long shots anyway. I simply don't have a product photography portfolio for the kind of product photography they need. As you can see above I prefer the artistic approach in product photography. However, there is good news too. I let you take a guess until this stuff is finalized and "in dry sheets" as we say in Germany.

Combining drawing and photography

Image
This combination happened by accident more or less. I needed something to put the lense on, so that I got a focused picture while doing a long exposure. Well, a fisheye lense can be quite tricky. ;-) I still like this picture a lot!

Looking up the Münster of Basel

Good morning everyone. I hope all of you had a wonderful and relaxing weekend. I certainly did. With a grande Starbucks Java Chip Chocolate Cream Frappuccino, two hours of browsing in a bookstore to finally find an interesting read ("Lunch in Paris" by Elizabeth Bard . I love browsing in bookstores, Amazon is nice, but it can't replace the feel of real books or a bookstore.), making plans for the near and far future (getting new shelfspace from IKEA this week, buying a few good polo shirts on sale and buying a new and very good vacuum cleaner later this year {The one I own now is absolute crap, it really does more harm then good. It creates nothing but hot, dusty air and puts any jet engine to shame with its decibel-levels. ugh}) and a Sunday afternoon filled with creating artwork. Have a wonderful week everyone.

Wolkenburgs graveyard trees

Image
Ha, I really like this first picture, it is so artsy! Aren't they totally fascinating? I'm currently photographically obsessed with tree bark and its patterns. Today I'm going to buy a new pair of earphones, since I put one earpiece into my tea yesterday.... Yep, not that smart. Well, they were already on the brink of falling apart, so this made the buy only more urgent. Enjoy your weekend.

Admit one

Image
General Admission , an exhibition by Tessa Alexander. What does it mean to carve a small society up into fractions? What are the functions and implications of these divisions; how are these divisions, based on class, race, education, political affiliation, sexuality, gender and even disability, reflected in everyday life? A glimpse might be had from Tessa Alexander's latest show. FROM THE ORGANISERS: General Admission looks at this latest trend of dividing a space using rather imposing scaffolding creating sections within an area purely based on economics and naming these sections VIP and even VVIP relegating the General Admission section to the very back of the space so you become the outcast. This very disturbing trend has become the norm and it seems the past and where we have come from is repeating itself. In this body of work I look at "General Admission" who does this apply to? Are we not all general admission, did carnival, jouvert, steel pan, doubles, sno cone e...

Yes, I took all of them with my Digital Ixus 75. This little camera is surely fantastic when it comes to macro photography.

The path for Alice in Wonderland - or was it San in Wonderland?

Another SANSSOUCI photo. I still wonder how I managed to get pictures without people in this Park, which was full of tourists. (Me being one of them. ;) Guess I got lucky. In any case I LOVE this park.

Taking the train is even greener now

Image
Took this pic at the trainstation of Wolkenburg. As you can see nature is taking back this space. From what it looks like, the last train has left the station a decade ago. Don't know when exactly though. Well, at least it's good for taking pictures now. XD Today, I get my hair cut, after four months since the last cut, it is high time.

Catherine O'Donnell's Nepean High School Residency

Image
Catherine O'Donnell, 'May God protect you', 2010, charcoal on paper, 96 x 65 cm. NADC Fine Arts teacher Catherine O'Donnell has just completed a four week residency at Nepean High School, working with the school's best visual arts students from years 8-11. Catherine worked with the students to create a mural, which will go on permenant display in the School's hall. The hardworking students had the opportunity to acquire skills in representational drawing including perspective whilst working on the large mural. The mural depicts the student's view of  life at Nepean High School. The residency was a partnership between Nepean High School, Arts NSW, and The Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest. Catherine will be having an exhibition of her own drawings produced during the residency. the exhibition, featuring charcoal drawings of the nepean High School architecture will be on display at the Penrith regional Gallery and The Lewers Bequest from A...

At night all the lights are green

Image
Or at least it seems like this on my Leipzig at Night photos. This is the staircase of the new university building. When I found this pic in the envelope (film is often better) I was quite surprised, because I didn't remember any green lighting. Well, the effect is cool though. And a warm welcome to my new worldwide friends. Have a great start into the new week. Mine was quite good.  ;)

Super 8 is suspenseful

Image
Zack Mills and Kyle Chandler in "Super 8." Not a bad film. At times a little creepy and always suspenseful. The deliberate attempt to re-create that awe and wonder of early Spielberg blockbusters (think ET) is a little heavy-handed but works. The special effects and some action sequences feel loose. But all in all this is affecting and effective. One underground shot is brilliant. Stay for the super 8 footage that plays during the credits: this is perhaps the film's best part. STARS: ***

Motschekiebchen

Image
Ahh, I can see the questionmarks on your faces, at least if you aren't from Saxony. Motschekiebchen is a saxonian term for the Marienkäfer whose english name is ladybug. I took this picture on the bank at Chris and my favourite part of our usual cycling round. This little ladybug was really fast on his legs, I took like 30 pictures (digital!) and from them the Motschekiebchen was only in 2 or 3 in focus. But those pictures look nice nonetheless. Today I wanted to attend a digital photography class at the adult education center. Not that I really need it, but I figured that I would maybe learn a few new tricks, especially for GIMP. At the moment I still need ages to do anything in this program. (In case you are wondering now: I'm a photographer not an editor! Editing is fine and I'm glad that it is now so much easier than when it had to be done without digital help. However I think sometimes the editors go way over the top.) Unfortunately the class was canceled due to low re...

Overgrown

Image
One of the many old family resting places on Leipzigs graveyards. I really like Leipzigs cemeteries, they are like huge parks. Even though the best cemetery I have ever seen was in Edinburgh (Scotland), called the Dean Cemetery. It really is like a sculpture park and it took me and my friend quite a while to figure out that all the obelisks and sculptures were actually tombstones. It has it's own website even: http://www.deancemetery.org.uk/ . Enjoy your Friday.

Does Rihanna’s latest video glorify:

Image
1) violence 2) violence against men 3) vigilante justice 4) crimes of passion ? 1) it is violent, though that fact does not make it glorify anything. If anything it is a realistic depiction of a human situation. All the controversy is misplaced. 2) well clearly there is something romanticized about the idea of "hell has no fury like a woman scorned". And somehow, you get the sense that if this was a video about a man killing a woman who horned him things would not be the same. Yet, is there not a double standard in criticizing women in positions of power enacting violence and not doing the same for men? Thus 3) what may be wrong about this is that is romanticizes vigilante justice in general. Or does it? Is this video social document or normative standard? After all it is just a pop video. And actually it is one of the few videos out there reflecting something that is unfortunately very real. 4) doubtful. Thus, to me, the most pressing question in this video is: WHAT IS RIH...
